                Voice Care tips

                Below are some reminders to help maintain your best vocal quality.  
                Remember, speaking or singing in a clear voice is the most important part of maintaining a healthy voice.

                Water, water, water
                Drinking plenty of water through the day is one of the best ways you can maintain your voice.  I recommend approximately 6 to 8 glasses of water daily.

                Vocal Rest
                If you begin to notice that your voice is getting a little hoarse, it's time to stop talking or singing.  Once you begin to sound hoarse, the damage to vocal tissue is already done.  Vocal rest can be very beneficial in restoring yoru voice in the short term.

                Stop Smoking.Period

                Reduce caffeine and alcohol
                These products dehydrate your body and your voice.  These products also contribute to reflux, which can adversely affect your voice.

                Cross screaming off your list
                Screaming can severely damage vocal tissue.  Either: silent scream, assign a designated screamer, or scream in your head voice!

                Avoid frequent throat clearing and coughing
                These are abrasive to the vocal folds and may cause injury.  

                Medications
                These can be dehydrating, especially OTC drugs.  Common medications that cause dryness include: antihistamines, beta blockers, inhaled steroids and allergy medicines.

                Throat lozenges
                Minted, menthol or medicated lozenges are not recommend.  These products can irritate the throat and esophageal lining.
